Creating a Space for Mary within Our Homes
In the Catholic faith, August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. But why do we, as Catholics, have such a deep devotion to her and how do we Welcome Mary into our homes?
Mary is the Mother of God, the woman whose faithful and generous “yes” brought Jesus into the world. Through her willingness to follow God’s plan, she gave us the sacred gift of knowing and loving her Son, who is our path to Heaven. This is why Mary holds such a special place within our faith, our families, and our homes. We do not worship her, but simply love her.
Welcoming Mary into our homes does not require extreme effort on our parts. No elaborate prayer space is needed nor a perfect routine of praying the Rosary every day. If you have time to pray the entire Rosary daily, it is a beautiful way to invite Mary into your home, to participate in the life of Jesus, and grow closer to Him. However, devotion can also begin through smaller, simpler acts of faith.
What does this Invitation Look Like?
It may look like setting aside a few quiet moments to pray the Rosary, using an app to guide you, or praying just one decade with your children while driving them to school. What matters is making room for Mary through simple practices that help our families understand who she is, why her life matters, and how her example can lead us closer to Jesus.
Let us first clear up one common misconception about Mary: Catholics do not worship Mary; we honor her. God chose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus and what a great honor and undertaking that was. Everything about her life points us toward her Son. Our devotion to Mary does not take anything away from Jesus. Instead, she helps us know Him, love Him, and grow closer to Him. Her entire being is centered around Jesus, and she offers us her help, support, and guidance in how to approach Him with an open heart.
In fact, Mary never asks us to place our focus solely on her. Instead, she continually invites us to turn our hearts toward her Son. Her words at the wedding feast at Cana beautifully reveal the purpose of her loving presence in our lives:
“Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5
By intentionally inviting Mary into our homes, we must first remember what she has already done for us and how her faithful example continues to lead us closer to Jesus.
Five Ways Mary Has Led Us Closer to Jesus
1. Mary Said Yes to God
As Catholics, we recognize that Mary’s “yes” changed the world. She accepted God’s plan without knowing every detail of what would come next. Because she placed her complete trust in Him, Jesus entered the world through her willing and faithful heart.
Like Mary, we are also invited to say yes—to open our hearts to God and faithfully follow wherever He leads us. Our yes to God matters, especially when the path ahead is uncertain. Each time we follow Him without knowing exactly where He is leading us, we place our trust in His plan for our lives.
This is why we turn to Mary for support and guidance. Through her faithful example, she teaches us how to surrender our hearts to God, trust in His promises, and courageously say, “Let it be done to me according to your will”
2. Mary Brought Jesus into the World
Mary carried Jesus within her, brought our Savior into the world, and lovingly cared for Him throughout His earthly life. She witnessed firsthand His complete devotion to the Father, shared in His joys and sorrows, and remained faithfully by His side—even standing at the foot of the Cross during His final moments.
Mary knew Jesus in the most intimate way, as both her Son and her Savior. Because of this, she continues to help us make room for Him within our own hearts and homes. Inviting Mary into our lives does not place her above or in place of Christ. Instead, she lovingly prepares our hearts to receive Jesus more fully, know Him more deeply, and follow Him more faithfully.
3. Mary Notices Our Needs and Intercedes for Us
As parents, we quickly learn how to recognize the needs of our families and children. We usually know where to turn when we need help with our jobs, relationships, health, or the everyday problems we face. But how often do we first turn to the One who can truly guide us through these earthly struggles? Probably not often enough.
Mary knew exactly where to turn. At the wedding feast at Cana, she noticed that the family had run out of wine, and she brought their need directly to Jesus. She trusted that He could help, even before anyone else recognized there was a problem.
This moment reminds us that Mary also sees the needs we may struggle to express. She offers us a solution, a way to release those burdens. We can ask for her prayers just as we ask our family and friends to pray for us. As a faithful mother, Mary brings our intentions to Jesus. She teaches us to turn to Him first in every circumstance.
4. Mary Remained Faithful at the Foot of the Cross
How faithful are we to Jesus in every season of our lives? When life is going well, it can be easy to place Him on the back burner. Becoming distracted by everything happening around us. Too often, we wait until we desperately need His help before turning to Him.
Mary offers us a beautiful example of unwavering faithfulness. She remained close to Jesus not only during the joyful moments of His life, but also throughout His suffering. Mary stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross. She refused to abandon Him even as her own heart was pierced with unimaginable sorrow.
Mary’s example reminds us to remain close to Jesus in both our joy and our suffering. She understands the pain of watching someone we love struggle. She reminds us that we never have to endure those difficult moments alone. Through her faithfulness, Mary teaches us to remain beside Jesus. To trust in His presence and hold firmly to our faith during every season of life. Especially in the season of joy, those are the ones we should be giving Him all the glory.
And in Jesus’ suffering, He still looked after His mother just as He looks after us. Jesus bestowed a beautiful gift upon us—the gift of His mother, one that He so generously shared with the world.
5. Mary Became a Mother to Us
From the moment Mary gave her faithful “yes,” she began a journey that would lead her to become a spiritual mother to each of us. We see this beautiful gift revealed while Jesus was on the Cross. In the midst of His suffering, He said to Mary, “Woman, behold, your son,” and to His disciple, “Behold, your mother.”
The Church recognizes this moment as a beautiful sign of Mary’s spiritual motherhood. In that one moment, Jesus invited each of us to receive Mary as our mother.
What an extraordinary gift we have been given! Gifts are not meant to be placed on a shelf and forgotten. They are meant to be opened, received, cherished, and allowed to bring goodness into our lives. When we welcome Mary into our hearts and homes, we embrace the gift of a mother. One with a loving heart leading us back to her Son.
Understanding Her Beautiful Immaculate Heart

Keep Rosaries Where You Can See Them
Place Rosaries in meaningful places throughout your home, beside your bed, near your favorite chair, or in the car. Seeing them can become a gentle reminder to pause and pray.
Even if only one decade, pray together before bedtime, on the way to school, or whenever someone in your family needs prayer. These visible reminders help make Mary part of your family’s daily life.

Teach your children the Hail Mary while they are young, but also introduce them to other beautiful Marian prayers, such as the Hail Holy Queen, the Memorare, and the Angelus.
Encourage your children to call upon Mary in both joy and sorrow. Asking for her intercession. Teach them to love like Mary. Always with a pure and tender heart.
Wear a Scapular
Wearing a scapular can serve as a quiet, daily reminder of our devotion to Mary and our desire to follow Jesus faithfully. It is not a good-luck charm or a replacement for prayer. It is a sacramental that reminds us to place ourselves under Mary’s loving care and protection.
Take time to explain the meaning of the scapular so your children understand that wearing it is an outward reminder of an inward commitment to faith.
Wear Marian Jewelry
A Miraculous Medal, Marian necklace, bracelet, or ring can be another meaningful reminder of Mary’s presence. Each time we see or touch it, we can offer a quick prayer such as, “Mary, guide me closer to Jesus,” or “Blessed Mother, pray for my family.”
Marian jewelry can also become a treasured gift for a Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, birthday, or another important moment in a family member’s faith journey.
As children grow to understand Mary’s heart, they can also begin to recognize how deeply she understands theirs. Mary knew happiness, uncertainty, love, sacrifice, and sorrow. She reminds us that whatever our hearts may be carrying, we can bring it to her and trust that she will intercede on our behalf.
What does Mary’s Immaculate Heart teaches us?
It teaches us to love with a pure and faithful heart. To trust God completely, and to remain close to Jesus through every season of life. When we honor her heart, we ask her to help shape our hearts. Our hearts become more like hers—open to God’s will, attentive to the needs of others, and always centered on Christ.
The Catholic traditions we begin today often become the prayers our children remember tomorrow. These traditions create a ripple of faith that can follow our children into adulthood and into their own homes. Eventually they are passed on to the next generation.
